76 | People say that god works ln mysterious ways. Well. Yes: but I believe that God works his wonders through the ordinary events of ordinary people, but then each of our lives tells a unique story. There are no ?ordinary? lives and nurse Latchford was no exception! As this pencil sketch drawn by Katie illustrates. And you can hear her voice in them. Mary Latchford was born in Scotter on July 18th 1916 one of 13 children to Annie and William Wilkinson. Mary left school at 14 and came down to Barnack, where her elder sister Annie, was in service, and Mary worked in a dairy owned by Mrs. Joy TThompsons parents who agreed to sponsor her to become a nurse. Mary started training at Peterborough hospital: hard going with all the work and exams. And because most of the nurses would have come from a more well off background. That many years ago, things were different and could be difficult, but there were good times of laughing and playing tricks with some of the other nurses and finishing up before matron. Mary qualified as a fully trained nursing sister - a SRN with blue belt a and silver buckle. Dduring her time in hospital nursing, she nursed some well-known people including Peter Sscott, the naturalist. Mary met Frank on a visit to her sister in Barnack and they married in 1941 - Frank died some two and a half years ago: over 60 years together. Their first home was a little cottage in main street, Barnack and mum was proud of her first home. Later on, they moved to a better cottage in Millstone Lane and from there to Greystones in 1948. This was the police house and the policeman was retiring - but because he was ill, mum agreed to let him and his wife stay until he died. During her time at Greystones life was very busy for mum as a district nurse and worked as far away as eye, Castor and even on, occasionally Thorney. She was also a relief nurse when her colleagues were off duty - a large round to take care of on a bike and eventually borrowed money from Peterbroough council to buy a car which she repaid from really a quite poor salarry, going without herself, so that neither my brother nor I went without. Gran was great help at this time. Everyone loved mum - a friend, as well as their nurse and was extremely respected in the village. She never refused to help anyone and was once called out to deliver pups from a bitch with some problems (not that she was told that when called out!). She could be seen in her nightdress with district nurse coat and hat, just popping down to Mr. or Mrs. So and So, because they had taken a turn for the worse and was not going to wait for daylight to see them. If someone needed her at night, she was there for them. And if all this was not employment enough, at one time stood for election to local government. Mary retired from nursing in 1973 but continued to be recognised as nurse Latchford wherever she went. Aand with all her many friends here, there were also many friends in Cromer where Mary loved to holiday. Quite simply a people person. We have looked back witth affection and love and with thanks for her life - and there must be many who have done so in the past - and now look forward in trust that Mary will now know the light, joy, and peace in God's presence. At last Jesus has his sunbeam. Safe home - thank God. Retired nurse and keen caravaner Mary Latchford Retired district nurse Mrs. Mary Latchford, formerly of Greystones, Barnack, died on March 23 at Holly House Care Home, Scunthorpe, aged 88. She was the daughter of William and Annie Wilkinson and educated at Scotter Village School. From local paper. Mrs Latchford enjoyed caravan holidays at Cromer. Widow of Frank, she leaves her daughter Katie and son Charles. The Rev. Norman Rom officiated at the funeral service on April 13 at Marholm Crematorium. Mourners included: Mick and Katy Rushton, Michael and Sarah Rushton (representing great grandson Alex), Mr. and Mrs. R Thompson, Stephen Thompson, Mr. and Mrs. H Parkinson (Betty and Peter Bradshaw and family), Mrs. Joy Thompson, Mr. David Thompson, Jan Slack and Hazel Joyce (Hilda Ruff), Mr. and Mrs. Harold Croft (Paul and Philip). District Nurse SRN) formerly of Barnack passed away peacefully in her sleep at Holly House, Scunthorpe on 23rd March 2005 aged 86 years. Loving mum, grandma and great grandma. Jesus has his Sunbeam. 91 | What an honour to give thanks and celebrate this wonderful man's life and to pay him tribute. Sadly, I did not meet him, but have heard so much in so short a space of time of his kindness, his willingness to put others first and to offer love, help and support when needed. His obvious love of his family and his attention to all members from youngest to oldest was a continuing theme. The love that he showed has been reflected back to him in the dedication with which he was cared for in his final months at home. After 63 years of marriage to his beloved Isobel, he ended his earthly time being cared for by the family at home with the invaluable support from the Rowans team. I heard especially of his joy of spending time with the children - and sharing his love of the written word and music with them. I heard of many wonderful trips to shows - especially musicals in London, for the grandchildren - something that will be carried through their lives as they delight in similar shared joys. That love of music is reflected in the choice of music today when the service is coming to a close. I won't spoil the moment by telling you - but I am sure you will appreciate the fun and laughter that surrounds this particular piece along with the more thought provoking words. Ron's love of classical music was reflected in our entry music today too as we heard that wonderful 6th. Symphony from Beethoven. During Ron's earlier life he spent 6 years in the RAF as a navigator, often flying in Dakota's and this bred an interest, later shared by many of his family, of old planes. How he would have enjoyed this last week's tribute to the D-Day landings with the Dakotas, Lancaster, Spitfires and of course the Red Arrows. After leaving the RAF in 1953 he spent many years in the off - license business - one way or another. Time was spent in Leigh Park, Wisbech, Cambridgeshire and Portsmouth working for amongst others, Elgoods and Brickwoods. Stephen recalls the moves, back to Portsmouth I think it was, with the exact date 15/02/1971. Curious as to why the date was imprinted so firmly in his mind - he answered - 'it was decimalisation day!'. Isn't it strange how some dates just stick! Ron had many interesting activities - his love of family history had blossomed after his own father died and resulted in him offering himself in voluntary work in the Local Hampshire Genealogy Society. He was a long-term member of the Freemasonsns, his lodge being the Five Heads Lodge at Horndean, where he was for quite some time chaplain to his Lodge. He was also an avid member of the wine club and spent much time researching for and enjoying the trips that he and Isobel took with them and had such fun. After he was made redundant in 1980 he spent time with the family whilst running his own business in stocktaking which he opened and continued to work up until very recently. Above all this his sense of humour, love of others, kind-heartedness and helpfulness shine through in his love of his family. His grandchildren and great grandchildren and extended family, brought him such joy and pleasure and they received his love and playfulness in return. I would like to read you the short tributes by two of them found on social media. What a wonderful life lived and legacy left, to those who knew and loved him so dearly. Service was presided over by The Reverend Rachel (Kim) Weeks. | Thompson, Ronald Harry William (I00277)
