- What an honour to give thanks and celebrate this wonderful man's life and to pay him tribute. Sadly, I did not meet him, but have heard so much in so short a space of time of his kindness, his willingness to put others first and to offer love, help and support when needed. His obvious love of his family and his attention to all members from youngest to oldest was a continuing theme. The love that he showed has been reflected back to him in the dedication with which he was cared for in his final months at home. After 63 years of marriage to his beloved Isobel, he ended his earthly time being cared for by the family at home with the invaluable support from the Rowans team. I heard especially of his joy of spending time with the children - and sharing his love of the written word and music with them. I heard of many wonderful trips to shows - especially musicals in London, for the grandchildren - something that will be carried through their lives as they delight in similar shared joys. That love of music is reflected in the choice of music today when the service is coming to a close. I won't spoil the moment by telling you - but I am sure you will appreciate the fun and laughter that surrounds this particular piece along with the more thought provoking words. Ron's love of classical music was reflected in our entry music today too as we heard that wonderful 6th. Symphony from Beethoven.
During Ron's earlier life he spent 6 years in the RAF as a navigator, often flying in Dakota's and this bred an interest, later shared by many of his family, of old planes. How he would have enjoyed this last week's tribute to the D-Day landings with the Dakotas, Lancaster, Spitfires and of course the Red Arrows.
After leaving the RAF in 1953 he spent many years in the off - license business - one way or another. Time was spent in Leigh Park, Wisbech, Cambridgeshire and Portsmouth working for amongst others, Elgoods and Brickwoods. Stephen recalls the moves, back to Portsmouth I think it was, with the exact date 15/02/1971. Curious as to why the date was imprinted so firmly in his mind - he answered - 'it was decimalisation day!'. Isn't it strange how some dates just stick!
Ron had many interesting activities - his love of family history had blossomed after his own father died and resulted in him offering himself in voluntary work in the Local Hampshire Genealogy Society. He was a long-term member of the Freemasonsns, his lodge being the Five Heads Lodge at Horndean, where he was for quite some time chaplain to his Lodge. He was also an avid member of the wine club and spent much time researching for and enjoying the trips that he and Isobel took with them and had such fun. After he was made redundant in 1980 he spent time with the family whilst running his own business in stocktaking which he opened and continued to work up until very recently.
Above all this his sense of humour, love of others, kind-heartedness and helpfulness shine through in his love of his family. His grandchildren and great grandchildren and extended family, brought him such joy and pleasure and they received his love and playfulness in return. I would like to read you the short tributes by two of them found on social media.
What a wonderful life lived and legacy left, to those who knew and loved him so dearly.
Service was presided over by The Reverend Rachel (Kim) Weeks.
